AD1851 is for about $10 and yes, it has a serial interface, so what? I
prefer serial.

it's ok for me to loose few LSBs and get a decent DAC. 16-bits is
sometimes
cheeper than 12-bits due to their designation. 16-bits are widely used
in
commercial electronics and must be cheap and available, while industrial
precise 12-bits may cost a fortune (BurrBrown makes 12-bit DACs even for
$200 a piece!)

I say 3 cents is more than enough.
(33_steps_per_semitone)*12*(8_octaves) = 3168 which is 12 bits
any other calls?
