The main thing that's stopped me doing this is that bbd's will usually only
give you a couple of octaves range, unless there's a trick i'm missing - i
guess you could use different taps for different octave ranges, but no
smooth transition between the two.

What about putting a VC all-pass filter in the feedback loop? Or not
putting a filter in at all but some interesting nonlinearity. (I guess my
interest is more in the noises that something like this would produce - not
necessarily tuned tonal...)
