speed difference?

Well, you answered your own question really. What makes the G3
processor that much faster than the Pentium II? The PROCESSOR itself.
They're two entirely different designs. They process the incoming
information very differently.
In fact, when IBM/Motorola developed this new processor they
first went to the manufacturers of the most popular software companies
(Microsoft, Adobe, Apple) and they asked them what it was that their
software specifically needed from the processor. Then, having gathered
all these answers, IBM/Motorola built the G3. And so inherently, the G3
can run applications much more smoother and quicker. It was built
purposely to run them.
MegaHertz is not like Miles Per Hour. It's not a linear
function. It may be more comparable to HorsePower. A car can have 300
MPH for a top speed, but then have only 130 HorsePower. So, the car can
get up to 300 Miles Per Hour, but doesn't do it very quickly.
My car on the other hand, (1988 Mustang GT modified) has 265
HorsePower. So, although it's top speed may be 150 Miles Per Hour, it
can get there very very quickly. The car is fast.

If I had a dog, I'd train him to kill on command. And the command I'd
use would be, "Is he friendly?" --R.M. Weiner
