pots, what ones, cheap?

Warning: this is a very Newbie question... sorry.

I'm just starting my first DIY project (an asm-1) and I am currently
gathering all the necessary components.  There are so many different pots
to choose from, all varrying in price and description.  What ones do you
recommend?  Type?  Brand?  etc?  I want to buy a bunch of them at once so
I can save money but I don't want to be stuck with something that won't
work, or that will degrade after only after a short time.
