digital synth modding

I would like to do some digital synth mods.  I will probably start with
cosmetic and user interface enhancements to my TX81Z, and move on from
there.  Of course, I would like to (informally) publish my results on a
list such as this.

1) Is this an appropriate forum for such activities?  I've basically
only seen analog synth circuits discussed here.

2) Can someone recommend a good EPROM programmer?  I'd like to hook one
up to my Pentium GNU/Linux box, but I've never set this sort of thing up
myself.  Some other guy figured out the dirty bits of the hardware when
I last programmed firmware...

3) Is there a list of disassemblers and decompilers for popular embedded
systems CPUs somewhere?
