This is something that makes me think.
"Punchy" means that you reach the max level fast, and stay at (or near) the
max level
for some time, before the fast decay begins.
For a standard, RC-shaped contour this means that you can control the
"punch" by
setting the asymptode level vs. peak level. The more these two differ, the
more you cut
the "inverted expo tail", the less "punch". Though I have not tested this
in depth by myself,
this is exactly what I had a certain feeling to be true all the time.
That's one more reason
why linear envelopes lack something, even when applied to en expo VCA, and
in case
of the attack phase of the envelope, *especially* when applied to an expo
VCA.
