Hi All,
>Whew!< Discussion overload! So here is the result:
It's Bill's new PC based MIDI sequencer.
1) Generic AT case 6 X 5-1/4" drive bays. Giant, reassuring power supply.
Cost: FREE (throwaway)
2) 'Matasonic' 486 motherboard w/ i486DX2/80. 8 ISA, no PCI, 16MB parity
ram. AMI BIOS date 1993.
Cost: FREE (throwaway, was in case)
3) IBM Japan 171MB hard drive
Cost: Called in a favor
4) Keyboard, mouse etc.
Cost: Pretty cheap.
5) Trident VGA video card, 512K. Generic IDE and I/O card.
Cost: Gifts from computer friend
6) Super friggin cheap Digital Research ESS1869 sound/game card.
Cost: $19.95 plus tax
7) Best Data 336F modem.
Cost: $9.95 with rebate
8) Software: Win95B, Cakewalk 3.0, Winsock FTP, WAV browser.
Costs: None to me...
9) Quick-Shot MIDI composer keyboard controller, with standard joyport type
interface. Plugs straight into sound card. No batteries required in this mode.
Includes full version of Cakewalk.
Cost: $129.95 plus tax
Total outlay: $175.00, but the quick-shot is not really required for
sequencing operation. I guess I'll need to spend something on a cheapo
monitor, too. Should be able to buy a good green/orange screen for $20.00.
As you might notice, the system has no removable media, but is modem
equipped. I intend to change software via FTP for now, and over an ethernet
connection in a few months, thanks to a spare ethernet card.
So, tonight I'll hook it all up to the Fatman/EML combo and see what comes
out. Perhaps the unit will be ready to scare the kids this halloween. If
not, I can always crank on the Hammond/Les... Tocatta and fugue in D-minor?
