I wouldn't dare to change this part too much - for the reason you
mentioned.
Note that, while using dual opamps, they did *not* use one dual opamp chip
to drive the upper and lower end of one diode bank, but they rather
distributed
the power to separate chips ... and to precisely calculated pullup
resistors !
