We had a two maximizers in or studio before. Models 822 and 422 perhaps.
As I remember it it delayed (or perhaps just slighty phase shifted) the
high frequencies. Probably a simple two band thing. It also provided a EQ
in order to gain the lower frequencies. That could be a simple gain
controlling the lower freq channel.
But I also recall redaing something about the mid frequencies in the
manual, cannot remember what it was though - I'm providing very useful
info  here :)

It was very easy to overuse the 822 and spoil a mix totally.
