where to start ?

hi all,

i've ordered a paia fatman which hopefully will be my first diy project
on synths. the question i have is the next : what is a good modular
synth to start with if i would like to make one myself ? this so i can
prepare myself a bit (i have the electronics background as computer
scientist)

i know it isn't an easy question. i've looking for info on the net,
found a lot of ideas - both kit and from scratch - but i just don't know
where to start ...

for example, how is the maxx modular or where can i find schemes for the
asm-1 ?
