If you're in the UK, the 8 pin, 12c508 PICs are only 1.99ukp from Maplin so
you can buy them on the high street in most major towns.
IIRC the 12c508 draws well under 10mA.
You can build a parallel port PIC programmer for your PC for less than 20ukp
- a bit of web searching will turn up all sorts of resources.
The equipment also pays for itself in about five minutes if you get the code
for Playstation chips and sell them to your friends...
(NB for playing import games only of course - not cd-r copies !)
