8-pin PICs are not so costly,
less than $2 apiece!
Don't know how it works for you, but here i can buy them with
little or no problem (2 weeks delivery), and no minimum quantity...
I mostly use 18-pin PIC16F84, because it is flash, and has 13
i/o pins, and costs about $4.
Freeware? i think i saw it on Microchip web page:
