Well, I think that's a matter of taste (like everything...). The
mellotron flute samples sound very much like Strawberry Fields to my
ears...
Sometimes you can get quite interesting sounds using short samples of
other instruments. Once I took a short sample of my Hammond (heavy
distorted, through Leslie with rotor off and miked) and sent it through
a filter with high env amount. Of course it sounded like a synthesizer
then, but a little bit of Hammond was still recognizable.
Hmm, it might be a good idea to use Hammond samples for wavetable
synthesis. Maybe with different amounts of distortion or different rotor
positions?
