How about fast ADC (flash?) driven with sawtooth VCO? If gain trimmed properly, it would provide even 256 times frequency square at D0 output. ADC bits might also be directly used as wavetable address. And gain incoherence of saw amplitude and ADC range would give some nice waveshaping modulation. Roman
