Dumb question...

I am a happy owner of a modular synth consisting of Doepfer and Analogue System modules and I thought I might try making some modules myself. Being new to electronic DIY, (I did dabble early in my teens but have forgotton all I had learnt), I have encountered what is a simple problem and I'm sure to receive some interesting replies to this question. I have a VCF circuit which uses a diode ladder consisting of 1N914s, question is this, which end of the 1N914 is which?

The diode has a thick black band at one end, is this the cathode or the anode.

There you have it. Abuse and shouts of idiot on a card!
