If you have a 5v power supply for the system, then use a
HC, HCT, or AHCT part. There's 8-bit latches in all these
families, and they're 7400 pin-out compatible.
If you have to use the metal-gate "4000" CMOS, then why not
use two of the 4-bit latches?
