....sheer number of parts, mainly.
And the design wasn't all that elegant.
And those tiny pots.... even if only one in 300 breaks down, that's a lot of
grief,
seeing there are 36 in each unit. You can't stand on those pots.
If people want to build mixers, go for it! But, if you want 90db or better 
signal to noise, the pcb layout isn't going to be trivial.
Something really worth building for home modular systems is plenty of CV
mixers, 
inverters, etc. Simple, and really increases the usefulness.
