I bought a nice soder remover at radio shack it looks like an iron but the
tip is a hole that is connected to a rubber bladder, you melt the sodder
and suck it out of the joint.  It is really effective if you angle the tip
correctly.  I think it is worth the investment because you can quickly
salvage anything that is sodered (especially if you need to desoder
something with more than three pins.
