Another good place to start, it's where I started over twenty years ago, is
to buy a copy of Electronic Projects for Musicians by Craig Anderton and
build some kits from there. The book contains instructions on soldering and
other practical matters. Once you've built up a few fuzz boxes and got them
to work you should be able to tackle the Fatman.
