I agree that having carefully chosen detuning is musically useful. But I
would still want to start from an accurate base tuning curve. A friend
of mine named Bouvard Hosticka has made an electronic clarinet by
putting switches on a clarinet and converting the clarinet fingering
system to MIDI. Within this conversion he can add deliberate tuning
inaccuracies, and he has in memory tuning curves he measured from
several clarinets. The results are quite impressive -- a much looser
realistic sound to the intonation.
