Digital or analogue multimeter?

I would definitely go digital. You get a lot more functionality and
accuracy for the money.
I'm not sure why anybody would tell you that measured values are unreadable
on a DMM for analog signals; unless you're trying to measure low frequency
signals by watching the needle wave up and down.
I just picked up a 4 1/2 digit DMM with frequency, capacitance, true RMS,
hfe, data hold and audio continuity check as well as standard DC volts,
ohms and amps measurement for $69 US (try Circuit Specialists at
http://www.cir.com).
