Umm... reading the data books I  would hazard a guess that the MAX038 is an 
<Improved> 8038....seeing as I don't have both data books to hand (I too collect 
old data books) I don't know about pin compatibility, but if it is more linear 
then the various circuits that turn 8038's into proper 1V/Oct VCO's should not 
only work but work better...

ETI T2000....all the parts are easily available, it has neat variable waveshape 
VCO's, but the PCB is huge, hard to recreate from the articles (though not 
impossible), and you'd need a bath of etchant to cook it in....I've toyed with 
idea of relaying it so it would fit into a 19" rack of some description (because 
all the parts are available) but somehow find something more important to do 
each time i get close to starting on it....
