If you want a really good trigger interface (sans sounds) for arrays of variable
trigger sources, try out the KAT Midi KITI.  I don't know if they can still be
had new, but I've had mine for about 8 years and it's still going strong.  It
has great auto training of triggers and midi note/channel/etc. as well as 256
steps of most dynamic parameters, and interaction control, much much 
amazing more.           
                                It's cheap too.  Maybe under 200.
