It never seases to amaze me. The Versatility of the 741. I always thought of
them as noise generators but I guess they do a good job of distortion too.
Next you'll be telling me they can be used as a quality filter. (Note the
absence of the word "high" preceding the word "quality")

But the theory falls down because a 741 probably sounds better without power
than when powered up. :)
