Maybe the not-so-close coupling between LED and the LDRs
(diffused light ...) has the advantage that the LDRs don't reach
their minimum resistance at all, and therfore you don't have to
cope with capacitive load for the opamps!
This would also explain a rather slow response, as the response
time of LDRs decreases witch decreasing illumination.
