74hctxxx to 4000 series CMOS

Alright, well, i found that the divide by n counter prob i had earlier
was just an intermittent thing caused by a flourescent desk lamp..it DID
work, but i was messing it up with the lamp..

Now, i have another..

Is it ok to use a 74hctxxx series chip to go straight into a 4000 series
cmos chip? 
I ask this cuz when the 74hctxxxx binary counter sends data to the 4067
demux, the demux suddenly cannot drive the leds that correspond with
binary numbers 9-12, and all the leds beyond that eventually go out
after a few seconds.. then, the counter resets back to 0000, and the #1
light goes on fine..
Is this because the 4067 has more gates on internally as the count value
increases, therefore having less current left over to supply to the
pins? 

Other than that, all is good..
