I'm not sure if the MIDIVERB2 has the same kind of
Power Supply as I'm thinking of but...
Regarding your question of whether the tip of the
power supply plug is + or -, it may be neither. I
have a couple Alesis products, and they use an AC
power supply. Anyhow... if it is DC, you should
check the writing on wall(wart ha-ha), and it
should have a diagram like so:

---| *---- (this is the inner tip)
| \___/
|
(this is the outer sleeve)
But my guess is that you have an alesis 9VAC PSU,
and if you checked the output with a multimeter
set to DC, you may have thought it dead.
Anyhow... my second point is that I've had
problems with equipment cutting out on me, and
several times it has turned out to be a pad has
lifted off of the PC board where the power enters.
So check for some broken traces and loose parts,
etc on the inside of the machine. You can track it
down by wiggling different parts, or pressing on
the PC board in different places.
