8-bit binary to BCD

This problem has started bugging me. ;) I went back to read up on the
74185 (binary to BCD converter) and it has a diagram for an 8-bit binary
to BCD converter using three chips. Hell it even has a converter for a
16-bit binary to BCD converter (using 16 chips)!
It should be quite easy to then take the 10 output lines and use the
first four LS Bits and pass them through a BCD-7seg driver, the next 4
bits to the next BCD-7seg driver, and the last two to drive the last
driver. Total of 6 chips?
Anyway, this was out of an old National TTL book.
Was it really a hardware solution? Or was it more software related?
