This is a little late, but: 

You can drop by Charettes, or any variety of art/craft store and pick up a
sheet of 12 or 9 point font dry transfer letters for under $10. This is
just about as cheap as you can get, barring writing on the front panels
with a permanant marker. You have to have a steady hand, though, and plan
everything out beforehand... it looks good from a distance, but up close I
don't think this method will fool anybody into thinking it's a
professional unit. (but maybe you have a steadier hand and better
temperment than I) Just remember to use clear acrylic on the panel
afterwards so you don't have them peeling off.
