simple crossfade circuit???

It's pretty simple (also low-tech and fast) to take a dual linear
pot and use the old tapering resistor trick to make one section 
look like a log taper pot and the other look like a log/antilog
tapered dual. 

It's not nearly as much fun as messing with active panning
circuits but it works well and is easy to get working.
