Small notice... I have seen too many EE students that barely seen a
soldering iron and they can't really trace errors or properly
understand a schematic even thougth they are supposed to have learned
about all the math and physical theory behind it. I have also seen
brilliant people getting out a lot of new knowledge while studying EE,
but most of these where fairly familiar with the soldering iron prior
to the studies... then of course there is those like me that kind of
drop out of the studies (eh, well, I still say that I will finish
it... some year), start work and knows a lot more of electronics than
those that studied it (well, where supposed to learn about it that
is).
If this was confusing, then you haven't seen how I confuse the EE's at
work WHEN I work ;)
This was not said to discurrage any studies, just to point out that
having a genuine interest is a great help. Sometimes people ask "why
do I have to learn this crap?" and having a hint on where and why it
is applicable in real life engineering helps a lot.
A friend of mine has worked with practical electronics years before
she started to study EE. It was furst until the Semiconductor theory
coarse that she understood why the Zener diodes where used in the
reversed direction all over... she knew they where but not why...
Personnally I still have to take the Semiconductor coarse, I love the
book but I am not a great student when it comes to actually sit down
and do all the boring excercises that one really banks the theory into
the spinal cord where it belongs.
PS. At Anders Sponton's webpage there is a collection of '79 Elektor
articles on Vocoders which seems very good. Check them out when
vallentuna's domain name resurface on the DNS.
PPS. Does any one happends to know where I get more of the
silver-springs that is used in the E&MM Spectrum Synthesizer keyboard?
PPPS. So I did get some DIY content in here after all...
Cheers,
Magnus
