As you say, they have to track, this could turn out to be a lot of slave
vcos. By the way, how does a constant pulse-width pulse wave sound, if 
played over some octaves ?

Someone mentioned to use a analogue step sequencer as sound source.
This is a good idea, because each stage is independent from each other,
so it is relativley easy to understand and to handle.  The problem is
that the fundamental is N times lower then the vco, if the sequenzer
has N steps. Ok, a while ago I suggestet to use a saw wave and a set of
window-comparators for this purpose (a simple adc, if you like).  This
would avoide the frequency dividing. Someone said that these stepped
pulse waves sound too harsh, well one could use a tracking vcf lowpass
to kill the higher harmonics, a selectable slope 6,12,18,24 dB would be
a good feature for this purpose. Most filters have N equal stages,
simply use a 24dB filter and tap all stages, not only the last.
