NewBie Question: Trigger-To-MIDI DIY?

Hi all,

I'm new to the list, so I don't know if this kind of stuff is discussed 
here, but...

I'm working on an art project and I need to find the cheapest 
trigger-to-MIDI device I can.  I don't know if I can get parts to build 
one myself or not.  Anyone done this before?  I don't need anything fancy 
- simple switches is all, but making MIDI from that is beyond me.
