This all reminds me somewhat of what the duo "windy and carl" do. They're
an ambient duo, except they use all acoustic instruments (for the most
part). For 1 album I believe they used a 45 second underground reverb
water tank. Very cool. Some of these somewhat older (and now progressively
more low-tech) solutions work pretty well.. a "real" reverb back from when
they used reverb _rooms_ has a very nice feel... I was tempted last year
to turn an unoccupied room in my dorms basement into a reverb room, but
opted not to due to since it would have been a bit of a pain. (not to
mention asking for trouble since I do most of my mixing at 2am..)
All of these solutions require a minimum of parts.. a mic or two, a decent
pair of speakers. Of course, as people will probably be eager to tell you,
unless you're just looking for an "effect", you'll want to be really
careful with placement, mic type etc.
