Don't forget to look at the "MIDI-To-Anything" web page:

http://www.calpoly.edu/~cwoodwor/midi.html

It lists NUMEROUS MIDI-to-relay driver devices.

Personally I like the JW Electronics MTP-1.
It's the cheapest, a mere 86 bucks;
has 32 outputs, is nice and small and simple,
and has a built-in supply regulator so it
can run from 7 to 35 vdc.

In fact, it's so good that I'm going to use it to control my
tube synthesizers. One can operate a ladder of trimpots
from the relay outputs to get an ARBITRARY CV scale
out of it. And run ANY kind of VCO. Linear, exponential,
what have you............it's no longer necessary to fight
around with thermistors to make a usable synth.........
