Yep, I thought those would be the first step as they are fairly straight 
forward. The next stage is some filtering and this is slightly more 
complicated as it needs some "history" (and optionally some "future"!) of 
the signal. A basic FIR and/or IIR is simple in principle -- just weighted 
sums of surrounding samples. Calculating the weights is less obvious but 
must be covered in some standard text. Its off to amazon.com for me!
