DSP anybody?

Is anybody on this list looking at using DSPs to create "analogue"
synths? I know there are some expensive commercial systems around but I
rather fancied having a go at something a bit cheaper. In the UK Maplin do
an evaluation/development system for Analog Device's SHARC for under 180
pounds. This has 16-bit stereo in/out and could easily emulate a typical
monophonic synth in something the size of a paperback. The programming is
the tricky part of course.
So, has anybody tried this or know of some good places on the web to look
for relevant techniques and info? Thanks,
