Simple MIDI?

I remember a long time ago (maybe over 13 years) that Electronic Musician (or was it Polyphony?)  had to endure a scandal whereby a DIY article contributor submitted a bogus discrete chip MIDI design and the mag published it without ever verifying if it actually worked.  While it may not have worked, I'll bet one could find some pretty good ideas to actually design something that could work.  I suppose if you contacted EM, they would remember it.
