I actually find that panning about 75% better than hard left/right... It
could be the width of my stereo spread, but if you let the swirl run too
far off center I find that it starts to lose it's feel and becomes more of
"oh, that's an _effect_"... 

Personal opinion only of course, whatever makes it happen for you all...
