In the good old days you had the cheapo sealed unit joystick as
found on most synths (Korg DW-8000 for example) or sold with
computers such as the Tandy Color Computer, and the higher quality
computer analog joysticks that used 2 pots (like the metal joystick i
had for the Apple II).
I think this is still the case, but i've not opened my Gravis joysticks
to
check. Your best bet however (and cheapest way) is to find an old
metal joystick (looks like a rectangular proto box with a red and a
blue button on the right and the joystick on the left) for Apple and
IBM (mid 80s). These had indestructible mechanicals.
If you still want to go the DIY way, i can make a GIF of how this
works and send it to you.
