Digi-Key has the Panasonic BBD chips and a reprint of the databook. They
have much better noise specs than the equivalent Reticon devices but
smaller modulation ranges (at least according to Panasonic's specs--you can
always push the envelope and see what happens). I'd suspect that you'd
typically get the same amount of noise (or less, depending on the chip)
even without compansion, which was practically mandatory for the Reticon
BBD's. And from the schematics they seem much more straightforward to
implement.
I haven't actually tried them myself, so this is pure speculation. Anyone...?
