Yes yes yes. Good power supplies. Also you can get the
H-something-something model (ahhh go see the web page @
www.power-one.com) which is +5 and +/-12. I've pulled a few of these out
of some scrapped datacomm devices (CSU/DSU's or something like that) and
they are great. The +/- 12 rails can be tweaked to +/- 16 just by
turning the trimpots. This drops the max current a bit but there's still
plenty for a modest modular (ARP 2600 size and smaller). The +5 can be
used for your keyboard interface or MIDI-CV converter.
Building your own is still an option. It's good to do it at least a
couple times in your DIY life, because you get a feel for the power
conversion side of things. Sometimes I like to do it that way just to
point at a synth and be able to say "yeah the whole thing is
scratch-built, even the power supply". This is, after all, a hobby.
However if you do roll your own, you're pretty much stuck with
78xx/79xx/LM320-xx/LM340-xx regulators which have average specs, rather
than the 723/pass tranny designs in the Power-One supplies which have
great specs. For a little analog home-brew machine you may not notice
the difference.
So in conclusion, if you want to exercise your building and design
muscles, build you own. If you want to get on with the synthesizer part
and skip the power supply worries, buy one.

OK everybody, repeat after me...
Get a Power-One Model number HAA15 - 0.8 - A from about a zillion places
(Allied, Newark, Sterling...). They
are about $42. I just bought 25 for the MOTM kits. Strappable for +-12
or +-15. UL/CE/VDE approved.

I am in need of a +- 15volt DC power supply. I will be using it to power
the ASM1 kit from G. Stopp. I have toyed with several possible ideas.
