The Analog Devices app note on the web (www.analog.com) for the SSM2120,
shows several possible applications for compressors, expanders,
limiters, AGC, and gates. The chip is about $7.00 a copy at Newark
Electronics but you get two channels of everything. Rane has a Mojo
compressor (www.rane.com) that uses the chip and you cane download the
pdf schematic file.

I have worked with this chip a bit this week on a bio-medical
application. The 22 pin package is odd but the part is resistant to my
mis-wires and torturing. The app note is a must read if you plan on
deviating from the available schematics. Access to 1% metal film
resistors and non-polarized electrolytics for the audio path is
recommended.
