.....well....if that were true then you would have some pretty
strange distortion artifacts every time you coupled audio
stages together.... this might be a rumour from the days of the
'liquid in a can' days of electros that had to be 'formed' by 
applying a controlled overvoltage.... I remember cutting one of
these open as a child (and my hand!) and being puzzled at the 
structure...
