Those awful crackly switches

Does anyone have a long-term cure for those awful crackly switches which
seem to infest my old audio (short of replacing impossible-to-find
interlocking sets or buying new equipment). Some people say clean. Some say
don't clean. Lubricate. Don't lubricate. AUGH! Whatever happen to those
semiconductiing liquid polymers that were around a few years back? I
thought were supposed to work like magic.

I won't even mention crackly pots...
