The standard consumer recording deck standard (read TEAC/Tascam
standard) is -10dBV for zero VU, which equates to about the 316mV level.
More professional equipment relies on the +4dBu standard for zero VU,
which equates to the 1.23V level.
I don't have any "telephone" pre-amp circuits, but their are a few
internet resources for "phonograph" preamps.
