Consider using two of National Semiconductor's (www.natsemi.com) LM1875
Audio Power Amp ICs for driving one or more headphones from a +/- 15v
supply setup. With the modern recording style headphones with 30 or more
ohms of impedance, the extra watts (about 10) per channel can drive
several pairs or one pair of home audio headphones (8 ohms).
I built a dedicated one rack space headphone amp for a friend
demonstrating studio mics at the last AES show using the above idea, and
was a hit for great audio headroom. It bettered the Rane, Furman, and
Behringer type units for transient response and low noise.
The NE5532 idea is also good for 30 ohm or greater headphone
applications if critical listening is not needed.
