The book I mentioned...

One book that I'm rather surprised isn't mentioned more is Joel Chadabe's
"Electronic Sound". It gives a very good perspective of both electronic
music (from tape music to the 1990's) as well as a good overview of
synthesizers. True, it doesn't have the flashy graphics of Mark Vails
"Vintage Synthesizers", but it simply has a lot more useful information.
It also has great interviews and accounts from people who were in the
field. Perhaps it's not specifically for synth designers, but I think it's
a book everybody should read. 

I think (?) it was out of print until recently, but Amazon has copies now.
