I think it really started with his Midi stuff.
The real surprise (for me) is that it's not just a analogue
versus digital issue, because I really like his GDS
albums (Dig It, Trancefer and Audentity). But when he
started Midi sequencing and Midi expanders, things went
downhill. Babel, for example, still has a lot of analogue
sounds, but it sounds quite lifeless to me. With his
later emphasis on strange samples he lost me completely.
(Dresden was the first one that really caused aversion.)
There were some signs of hope, recently. "The art
of sequencing" from his latest album has the long lost
flow and build-up again, though the sounds can't hide
their cold "virtual" origin.
These are only strong personal opinions, of course.
But I think it clearly shows what influence the sounds and
the user interface of instruments can have on the
creative output of an artist. (Though Schulze and and
his manager will heavily deny this.)
There is an interview with KS where he compares working
with Mellotron choirs and working with samples. Mellotron
was a big pain, of course, and samples are so easy. I have
no doubt about the truth in that, and it's coincident with
the statements of other musicians. But it doesn't say
a thing about the musical output. Listening to the choirs
on "X" and on "Miditerranean (sp?) Pads" speaks louder
than words.

I hope this wasn't too much off topic - but we all are builders
of musical instruments here, aren't we ?
