best way to do labeling on chassis?

You know, several companies make labeling devices... I know they can print
different size fonts, white and black, on clear tape. They're supposed to
be used for file folders and the like, but I'm sure they'd be fine for
panels if you use epoxy, or ya could do a final coat of clear acrylic. 
Personally I don't need fancy graphics on mine, just need to be sure what
cables go where. I also don't like spending forever on a front panel like
I did with dry transfer letters :) 

I seem to remember they're still pretty pricey, ($200? maybe) but I'm sure
you could buy one on credit at a place like Staples, punch up all your
labeling, and then return it.
